Charlie & Kiwi's Evolutionary Adventure
Through May 26, 2014
Did you know the origins of modern birds can be linked to dinosaurs from over 75 million years ago? Go on a journey to explore evolution and discover the connection between dinosaurs and birds at our latest special exhibit, Charlie & Kiwi’s Evolutionary Adventure, on display through May 26, 2014.
Using a kid-friendly storyline, Charlie & Kiwi’s Evolutionary Adventure follows a boy named Charlie as he writes a report about his favorite bird – the kiwi. Join Charlie as he travels to the age of dinosaurs with his great, great, great, great grandfather to discover the kiwi’s ancestors and learn how the bird evolved. Visitors can unravel puzzles, play games, explore interactive games, and get up close with live birds.
This exhibit tackles the subject of evolution in a way that appeals to children of all ages by allowing them to experience first-hand how animals and birds adapt to changes in seasons and the environment. By observing slight differences in live birds of the same species, visitors learn key evolutionary concepts like variation, inheritance, selection, time, and adaptation.
Exhibit Highlights Include:
- Find similarities in the skeletons of an Archaeopteryx, a bird that lived 150 million years ago, a Bambiraptor, a dinosaur that lived 75 million years ago, and a modern-day crow
- Change a dinosaur into a flying Archaeopteryx through an interactive game
- Distinguish between two different variations of live budgies (parakeets) by identifying the color of their beaks and legs
- Measure the beak size of several finches in an interactive game
- Learn about the evolution of kiwis through an animated movie illustrated by Peter Reynolds, an award-winning children’s book illustrator
- Much, much more, including discovery box activities, puzzles, and games
Charlie & Kiwi’s Evolutionary Adventure allows us to understand and make connections between the evolutionary processes that lead to extraordinary changes in the natural world. What will you learn about our world in your journey with Charlie?
